Just to add a bit of information, Shimshon Welner was the first CEO of the Golan Heights Winery and as such is a landmark figure in the history of Israeli Wines.

Quite true Daniel – I missed stating that. I hope to do a more full report on Shimshon Welner and his new venture. For now it is simple to state that Shimshon Welner and Peter Stern are both visionaries, builders, and leaders of the Yarden Winery, and the architect(s) of the platform upon which Israel’s wine revolution is built upon.

My honest take on the wines from Welner wines that I tried is they are peasant wines that are hardly drinkable, and are only for the bravest and most hard-up wine drinkers. I tried the entire series of red wines from the Tierre Salvaje line of wines. Forget $4 – I paid a whopping $6 per bottle! I have not tried the other mega cheap wines that Welner has created around the world. I have nothing against trying if given the opportunity. But I think it must be expressed that I think that Mr. Welner’s wines are more hype than substance.

I have not tasted the Tierra Salvaje wines for sometime, but the Terrenal wines are worth the four dollars. Of course these are not 90+ score wines. However, they are acceptable wines, irrelevant to the price. Another fun wine that they export is Sol De Chile.

I have tried the wines in Trader Joe’s – all of them and these wines -Sara Bee Moscato, the Terrenals and Banero Prosecco- are all more than acceptable in quality and the price is extraordinary. Some are better than others but they all beat the half spoiled crap wines that kosher reailers bought as closeouts and foisted on us a wine.
BTW These wines (the TJ’s stuff in CA) are fresh. There was a lot of old dreck Tierra Salvaje in the market and some of this was spoiled. My understanding is that an importer/distributor ( not Welner) bought too much TS and took years to sell his overstock. The wine sat and did what inexpensive wines often do – it spoiled.

Hey Shalom thanks for the heads up! I will look out for the Sara Bee Moscato and Banero Prosecco! I absolutely agree that these “cheap” wines are built to drink now, and leaving them around, or having them sit around in a warehouse is a bad idea. These 2009 Spanish Terrenals are all new and because they are not mevushal may last a bit longer. However, drink now and enjoy!
